Kenseth wins in the rain!
Written by Rich Hemstreet · February 16, 2009
Matt Kenseth made a late pass, and put a Ford in victory lane of the 500 for the first time since 2000. The rain brought out the checkered flag 48 laps early. Kenseth passed Elliot Sadler a lap before the caution came out for the final time. Kevin Harvick pulled off a second place… showing his Bud Shootout victory was no fluke.
A.J. Allmendinger had a great finish, bringing home his “Richard Petty Motorsports” Dodge in third place. Michael Waltrip finished in seventh place, the top finishing position for a Toyota. Dale Earnhardt Jr. caused a big wreck, while trying to get a lap back. He took out several cars, including a very strong Kyle Busch. Earnhardt also had a pair of mistakes on pit road, which kept him from having a decent shot at the victory.
At thirteenth overall Jeff Gordon was the highest finishing Hendrick car. He may have won a Gatorade Duel, but I still doubt he will be a threat to win a 300 (or more) mile race this year. Four Dodges in the top ten were a surprise, as was Tony Stewart coming home in eighth place.
The Sprint Cup Series heads off to Fontana California next weekend. It will be very intertesting to see how many of the new independent teams actually make the trip to the West Coast.

Why’s everybody being so nice to Junior? That last pit-stop the whole team acted like they’d just climbed off the banana boat. When the NASCAR guy is standing in front of the car waving his arms and dancing, it’s a good idea to find out what he’s going on about. The crew chief, the spotter and the driver (looking out his windshield) were in fine positions to see the poor guy but the only notice he got was to be straight-armed by the tire carrier when he got in the way. If Arod did that to an umpire he’d be headed for the showers.
Oh, yeah; missed his pit? Do I really have to mention the crew chief & spotter again?
I agree that Junior should have been parked in the penalty box for his running over Vickers and causing the big wreck. He should have been parked at least five laps for that bonehead move. His pit problems were all on him and his team.
