Hey NASCAR fans, IRL is a good show
July 31, 2003
I couldn’t agree with Terry Blount’s article in the Mercury News more. The racing in the past year and half or so that has been going on in the IRL is just that….racing. Hard, fast, balls to the wall racing. I watched the end of the Pocono race this past weekend and was satisfied because I picked Newman in my NASCAR pool, but other than that there wasn’t much to be thrilled about. It was a pretty tame ending. Then I switched over to watch the end of the IRL race…

Webber vs. Wilson: Round 1
July 31, 2003
This year has been very exciting for F1, particularly the Grand Prix of Great Britain two weeks ago. However this weekends German Grand Prix will have another interesting battle to watch. This will be the first weekend that Jaguar’s Mark Webber will have some real competition from his own team mate, Minardi transplant Justin Wilson…

No Vegas for IRL in 2004
July 31, 2003
Las Vegas Motor Speedway and the IRL were not able to come to agreement as to a date to run an IRL race in Vegas next season. Perhaps the IRL schedule is getting filled up with road courses! :)
NASCAR switches ad agencies
July 30, 2003
NASCAR has dumped its ad agency Y&R, creators of the “How bad have you got it” series of commercials.
Personally I LOVED those commercials and looked forward to each new one. However, the newly hired Martin Agency is responsible for some of the best NASCAR commercials out there; the UPS/Dale Jarrett “Big Brown Truck” series. The latest ones with Jackie Stewart are a scream. Hopefully Martin will take that same sense of humor to its new client’s commercials.
Dixon and Force Could Sweep the Swing
July 30, 2003
After convincing wins this past weekend in Seattle, both Larry Dixon and John Force will head into Sonoma with several things on their minds. First, both drivers would like to pick up another win, which would mean that they would both sweep the three-race western swing, a rare feat indeed…

Racing takes it’s toll on the body
July 30, 2003
Auto racing can really kill your body. Carbon monoxide poisoning, 120 degree (F) heat, 5 layer driving suit, instantaneous 50 G impacts…who says this race card driving is easy stuff?
After years of being told that drivers aren’t athletes, I really like the quote from Joe Gibbs…
So, coach, are these drivers athletes?
“That’s hand-eye coordination, depth perception and guts,” Gibbs said. “A driver who can race with three inches between himself and other drivers, when there are 40 other cars on the track, and instinctively make a decision that keeps him from wrecking is definitely an athlete.”
Tony Stewart press conference
July 30, 2003
Tony Steward, Zippy, and Joe Gibbs comment on the growth and change in Tony and the team since this time last season (the Brickyard was the scene of Tony’s “Punching the photographer” ordeal)…

Another spectator on track
July 30, 2003
From Autosport.com…
One week after the F1 British GP was disrupted by a protestor running onto the track at Silverstone, the Pennsylvania 500 NASCAR Winston Cup race at Pocono Speedway, PA, suffered a similar track invasion. A man with his trousers below his knees ran across the main straight while the field was under yellow. The incident was recorded by TV cameras but not broadcast. A man was apprehended and handed over to the local police.
