McLaren after Montoya
July 29, 2003
The BBC is reporting that McLaren is courting Juan Pablo Montoya to come drive for them along side Kimi Raikkonen next season. If I were Juan I would do like Ralf and stay put. While Kimi is still second in the championship, I think Williams has shown as a team that they are next in line to knock Ferrari off of the top rung in F1. McLaren is still struggling to get their 2003 car out the door. However, the team has announced a revised car that will hopefully keep Kimi in the hunt, at the very least.
Stewart/Ganassi rumors continue
July 28, 2003
From SpeedwayMedia.com’s News Briefs page…
Stewart rumors: Tony Stewart could be worth five million dollars a year, plus bonuses, according to sources who say that’s what car owner Chip Ganassi and sponsor Target are offering Stewart, the reigning Winston Cup champion. That would be nearly three times as much money as he’s making with car owner Joe Gibbs, according to sources close to the situation. Stewart has been noncommittal about the situation, but Cary Agajanian, his agent, confirms that a number of people are interested in hiring Stewart. - 7/28/2003

Barron still a sub
July 28, 2003
Though Alex Barron has won two IRL events now as a substitute driver, he still does not have a full time ride. This is clearly a symptom of the sponsorship driven racing business. When Alex won yesterday he did so in the car of injured Brazilian driver Felipe Giaffone, whose sponsor (Brazilian cigarette maker Hollywood) wants a Brazilian behind the wheel. That’s fine….

88 car rumors
July 28, 2003
Lee Spencer is reporting rumors flying around the Robert Yates 88 car team. First, there is the rumor that Robert Yates may be looking to sell his team, which seems a little ridiculous and was denied by Yates.
Second, there is the far more plausible rumor of Dale Jarrett looking to get out of the tumultuous Yates stable due to the recent personnel mess there, and the resultant awful season for the 88. Of course UPS has made Jarrett their driver/pitchman for the entire “Big Brown Truck” marketing campaign, so you know they will want to follow him where ever he goes. What a great package for the DEI #1 car who is losing Pennzoil at the end of this season!
Dyson Team Wins Infineon Grand Prix of Sonoma
July 27, 2003
The Dyson Racing Team scored its first-ever win in the American Le Mans Series Sunday with an exciting, come-from-behind victory in the Infineon Grand Prix of Sonoma at Infineon Raceway. James Weaver and Butch Leitzinger not only gave team owner Rob Dyson his first ALMS win, but made history as the first drivers to score an overall win with an LMP 675 car. The two drove a Lola EX257-MG…

Barron wins, Sam is back in Michigan
July 27, 2003
Alex Barron beat Sam Hornish to the line by a few feet at Michigan this afternoon. Hornish dominated the race for the last 20 laps only to get passed in the last turn. Regardless, this is Hornish’s best run this season, and the first run for Chevy’s Gen IV engine from Cosworth. How will this factor into Sam’s looming descision about where he will race next season? It will make his choice a lot harder if nothing else…
