Earnhardt still in the hunt
August 15, 2003
“During the modern era few drivers have been able to overcome a deficit as large as the one facing Junior. Darrell Waltrip won the 1981 title after trailing Bobby Allison by 341 with 17 races remaining. In 1992, Alan Kulwicki trailed Bill Elliott by 278 points with just six to go, before he made a charge for that season’s championship.”
“For Junior, those championship campaigns suggest that he is still within striking distance”….

Women in racing
August 15, 2003
The BBC has a piece on why there aren’t more/any women in F1 racing. Jenson Button thinks it is because they don’t start early enough. Most F1 drivers start racing shortly after they learn to walk. But on Sarah Fisher’s web site there are pictures of her driving at the tender age of 5. And Sarah shouldn’t jump the gun, but the way. First she needs to break into IRL before she could even consider F3000…let alone F1. Also, what is her road racing experience? She seems, from her bio at least, to be strictly a circle racer. That won’t fly in Europe where they are just getting used to the idea of ovals. Sarah should keep trying for success in IRL. If she can win consistently there, maybe go to NASCAR to really start ruling the world.
The only two women that I am aware of how have any chance in hell at any European open wheel road racing circuit are Sarah Kavanagh (as mentioned in the BBC article) and Danica Patrick (additional Danica link!!!), who apparently has her sights set on racing in the US.

Roush title hopes….
August 15, 2003
With a seemingly insurmountable 258 point lead, Jack Roush driver Mat Kenseth may finally bring that long elusive championship home. Being the pragmatist that he is, Jack also knows (from experience) it ain’t over til it’s over. It will only take a few Nascar imposed penalties and some bad luck for Little E to win the thing.

Right turns for IRL?
August 14, 2003
Seems the “right” thing to do. Kill CART, and have one open wheel series that is economicaly viable, has fan support, good drivers and races, and a variety of circuits. My only disagreement with the article is the number of road course races required. The writer strongly urges only two circuits, ala Nascar. Wrong! At least 25% of the schedule, say 5 out of 20 races, should be road circuits. Nascar has learned that the cost of special cars for only two races a year is excessive.
