Jeff Gordon on pole at Bristol
August 22, 2003
Jeff Gordon held onto his 127.597 mph, 15.038 second lap to claim the pole for Saturday nights Sharpie 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. There was a 90 minute rain delay in the middle of the session after Gordon made his early run. Mark Martin came out after the delay and nearly spoiled Gordon’s day running a 127.588 mph, 15.039 second lap to start second. Gordon’s pole breaks the event qualifying record of 15.292 seconds set by Rusty Wallace in 2000…

CART board dropping like flies
August 22, 2003
Just a few days after Derrick Walker resigned his seat on the board of Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART), fellow board member Robert D. Biggs followed suit. He cited “personal” reasons. Yeah, like it was his “personal” opinion that this company is going nowhere fast. Apparently some of the fans feel the same way…

Michael is just another driver…
August 21, 2003
…according to Kimi Raikkonen. Right, and the Hope diamond is just another gem stone! I just love it when drivers try to bolster their own confidence by minimizing the skills of the opposition. Kimi is undoubtedly a very racy driver but he shouldn’t even think about comparing himself to the king just yet. It takes more than quick reflexes and blindingly fast hand eye coordination to be a champion. It’s experience that will put Michael back on top this year.
..and Michelin is just another tire?
August 21, 2003
I don’t think so. Unless the weather is radically different than expected, you can expect the Michelin teams (Williams and McLaren) to fill the podium this weekend.
More perspectives on fighting

“Everybody’s got their face punched in occasionally,” said veteran Rusty Wallace. “But nowadays there’s no tolerance for it, the guys from NASCAR get all sideways about it. They’ve got the cops involved and they’ve got fines, and my God, it’s crazy.
“We’ve got a real cleaned up sterile sport right now. Do I like it? Hell no.”
I’ve forgotten why I was originally drawn to Rusty as a fan, he is always so up front with his comments.

One less obstacle…

…to the sale of CART. Prior to any sale all of the lawsuits pending against CART, such as Joe Heitzler’s suit for his termination, must be settled.
