Villeneuve fears for F1 career

September 16, 2003

I know we bash old Jacques a lot, but he makes it so damn easy. The BBC reports that he had no offers to drive F1 for next year and may have to run-off against other drivers if he is to have any hope of retaining his seat.

Not only has Jacques attitude and demeanor over the past 2-3 years ended his F1 career, but it will probably taint his legacy going forward. The thing that really boggles me is why he still sticks with Craig Pollock. It would seem to me that Craig has directed Jacques career away from championship winning Williams to a brand new team that never took on winning form…and still hasn’t. But I’m sure Craig has leveraged Jacques name to sell lots of t-shirts and making them both tons of money…

Dixon to F1? Not until 2005 at earliest

September 15, 2003

Scott Dixon made a low key appearance at this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix at Monza. Working with his top advisor, former F1 driver Stefan Johansson, Dixon met with several team owners. However, the result was that there is no room for him anywhere in F1 for 2004, and the Kiwi will retain his seat at Target Chip Ganassi Racing in the IRL. However, 2005 appears to offer far more options in the F1 area. Dixon ran a secret F3000 test with the Prost team, but the Frenchman opted for his fellow countryman Sebastian Bourdais…

Ryan Newman and his Penske Dodge have to be today’s prerace favorites. Unless rain or other drivers bad intentions or plain bad luck get in the way, we should see the No. 12 in victory lane for the 7th time this year.

McLaren, lackluster day

September 14, 2003

According to team McLaren, Kimi Raikkonen’s 4th place finish was as expected. Certainly David Coulthard’s early retirement was disappointing, but to me, Kimi’s inability to close and make passes on the leaders was more of a let down.

The title chase is still close and with two to go, you can expect another barrage of mind game directed comments over the next four weeks.

Alonso rebounds…

September 14, 2003

…from his qualifying mistake (starting last on the grid) and the first lap incident that put him a lap down. He also suffered a race shunt that lost his barge boards and loosened the cars bottom skid plate. He did manage a one stop 8th place finish. Its likely the post race inspection will rule his altered barge board illegal and forfeit his point for 8th place.
