Trulli Takes Indy Provisional

Title contenders Michael Schumacher, Juan Montoya, and Kimi Raikkonen all had fairly dissapointing first days at Indy. This left the door open for some drivers and team less used to the limelight to offer a good showing. Jarno Trulli took the provisional pole with a 1:09.566 lap, followed by Rubens Barrichello. Another opportunity to shine was seized by Jaguar driver Mark Webber who took the spot and will go out for final qualifying third from last tomorrow…

Jimmie Johnson, driver of the Nr. 48 Lowe’s Chevy, clocked the fastest time in practice for Sunday’s EA Sports 500. Running at the Talladega Superspeedway, he stopped the timers at 50.310sec/190.340mph to head Elliott Sadler’s M&Ms Ford by .026 second. Third was Jeff Green in the Nr. 43 Cheerios Dodge.

As the F1 circus arrives in Indy, many are pontificating about the value of experience with regards to the tight title fight between Michael Schumacher, Kimi Raikkonen, and Juan Pablo Montoya. The cards are stacked in Michael favor in that he has ‘been there’ and ‘done that’ as far as tight title fights are concerned.
Tomas to Panther?

There is no question that next year will be a turning point for Panther racing when they lose Sam Hornish to Penske. It will become glaringly obvious how much of the past two years championships was Sam, and how much was the Panther program. Tomas Scheckter might be a good move for Panther, but he is still a bit too aggressive. The beauty of the Panther+Hornish formula is that the team gets Sam to the front, and then Sam takes over and drives his ass off. I think the team would be hard pressed to even get Tomas to the front with out a lot of crumbled carbon fiber, but he is probably a good long term play…
