Schumacher wrecks Friday at Memphis

September 20, 2003

550b9650_std.jpeFriday, for the third event in a row Tony Schumacher stole the show. He won at Indy a few weeks back and made the fastest run in history last week, but unfortunately Tony got the wrong kind of attention on Friday. The streak was bound to end. He emerged unscathed from a classic massive blow over Friday at the 16th annual O’Reilly Mid-South Nationals at Memphis Motorsports Park. Doubly sad was that the wreck stole attention from the seven of eight professional-level track marks that were broken

Castroneves Claims Pole in Cali

September 20, 2003

Talk about coming through when you need to, with the 2003 series championship hanging in the balance, Helio Castroneves came through to take pole at Fontana with a blistering average speed of 226.757 mph. Points rivals Scott Dixon and Tony Kanaan also faired well scoring in the top 5.

The major concern is Sam Hornish in 10th. Sam needs to win the remaining races in the series if he hopes to claim a third consecutive IRL championship before leaving Panther racing to become Castroneves’ teammate next year at Penske. If anyone can come through the field tomorrow to win, it’s Sam. It will be an interesting day tomorrow…

Fontana fantasies

September 20, 2003

If I didn’t know better, I’d swear it’s Christmas. What better present could a race fan ask for then what we will get to see tomorrow at Fontana, and the last race at Texas? I only hope the Championship is still in play for the last lap of the last race of the year. It doesn’t get better then that! I will be pulling all the way for Sam the Man and his Chevy, but regardless of who wins it’s been a damn fine season.

Damn the aero grip

September 20, 2003

Want closer racing between cars? Want to see passing again? Nascar is finally seeing the light and taking the first positive step in restoring old time rock ‘n roll racing; that is getting rid of the aero grip in the equation of car setups. Now if we can get rid of restrictor plates and traction control (?) we may be in for some great racing within two years.

Webber impresses Jaguar chief

September 20, 2003

Mark Webber has made Tony Purnell, Ford’s chief of the Premier Performance group, delirious. Mark may be good but let’s not make him a demi-god of F1 just yet. Tony should be focusing on getting Mark a car as good as Michael’s Ferrari, then we’ll see how fast the lad truly is.

The IRL and team orders

September 20, 2003

With two races to go and a handful of points seperating the top five, would any team ask their “second” driver to help their front running team mate win the title? If it’s my team and decision, you bet your trophy I would!

The tire controversy impact

September 20, 2003

No doubt about it. The adjustment forced upon Michelin’s front tire design by the FIA due to Ross “The Rat” Brawn’s politcizing of the contest has had major impact on the championship hunt. If Michael manages to pull out his 6th world drivers title, there should be an asterisk next to his name in the records: “*races won due to FIA tire intervention.”

Cope to race with custom design

September 20, 2003

Derrike Cope was to race at New Hampshire Speedway last week with a custom designed car logo for sponsor Friendly’s Restaurants. The design was created by 12 yr. old Seneca Tedford of Lebanon Ct (not Tennessee as previously reported?) in a contest. Derrike didn’t manage to qualify and the car never received any exposure. At the MBNA 400 in Dover this weekend, Derrike has a provisional spot, starting 42nd, and is paying for the race himself as the Friendly’s sponsorship ended last week. Lets hope Derrike gets through the race without substantial alterations to the metal work and design.
