Newman Grinnin’ and Winnin’

October 10, 2003

RYAN NEWMAN (No. 12 ALLTEL Dodge Intrepid) - Wins Circuit-leading eighth pole of the season, setting a track record in the process.

“The track wasn’t as fast as I thought it would be. The guys at Penske Racing had this ALLTEL Dodge fast right off the truck. I gave everything I had on the second lap. I didn’t hold back on the first lap, but I gave it everything I had on the second lap. We just do the best job we can each week. I wasn’t surprised the lap was that fast, but I had to really hang it out on the second lap. I thought the first lap would have been better. It makes it a whole lot easier when the guys at the shop do the great job they do with the car. I wouldn’t say I’m surprised. It feels good for the team. It builds momentum for them, and we’ll try to take that into Saturday night.

More Jacques

October 10, 2003

BBC.com Motorsport editor Andrew Benson has a very well written piece on the departure of Jacques Villeneuve from BAR (and most likely F1). Benson takes an objective view of why Villeneuve may have given up his spot at Williams in 1999 to go to the then-brand-new BAR, and his naiveté in doing so. However he fails to consider one component of having Jacques on a team versus not; that is the complaining…

Ricky Rudd - No. 21 Motorcraft Taurus - “We ran a seventy-something in practice and it cooled off, so we certainly thought we would be better than what we ran. I’m not really sure what happened. We’ve been off the pace since getting here, but we’re even further off than we expected. They made a couple of changes for qualifying and that obviously didn’t help any, but we didn’t have a whole lot to lose by trying.”

Villeneuve Quits Before Last Race

October 9, 2003

Rather than complete his final Grand Prix with BAR after learning that he will be replaced at the team next year by current test driver Takuma Sato, Jacques Villeneuve has simply quit. He will not compete in the final Grand Prix of 2003 and we probably won’t see him in an F1 car again. A fitting end for a former champion turned bitter complainer…
