Newman earned his ninth pole of the year by a margin of .041 second over Bobby Labonte with a lap of 28.534 sec/194.294 mph.

This writers opptimism of Michel Jourdain Jr’s chances of winning the Surfer’s Paradise event seem a bit far fetched after the first round of qualifying. If anyone knows how to tune and adjust a race car it would be Bobby Rahal. My hopes are still there and I think Mr. Tracy is definitely feeling the heat from Bruno.

With the “retirement” of Gil de Ferran and the signing of Sam Hornish yours truly speculated a little while ago if Roger Penske were possibly eyeing an F1 return. Roger made an attempt at F1 in the 70’s. He is reportedly heading up a consortium interested in buying out the debt ridden Eddie Jordan.
