When It Raines It Pours

November 11, 2003

How about some huge props for Tony Raines this past weekend?! Qualifying 4th and finishing 6th is a gigantic accomplishment for him and his UNSPONSORED team. With the importance of massive corporate sponsorship in NASCAR these days it is amazing to me that a “privateer” team could do so well. What they did at The Rock is the equivalent of a pre-Gulf War II Iraqi airforce jet whooping up on a squadron of US Aif Force F-16s. Shouldn’t be possible, right? And to think Casey Mears is out there tooling around in a fully sponsored ride on one of the best teams out there…

Muldowney At The Finish Line

November 11, 2003

I don’t usually get all choked up about people retiering or getting out of motorsports after storied careers, but I’ve got to be honest ESPN really got me this past weekend with their coverage of Shirley Muldowney’s “Last Pass” in the final NHRA event of 2003. I thank them for reminding me of just how much she accomplished in her career. If you look at other situations of women making inroads into Indy racing or NASCAR and nothing compares…
