John Force racing has announced that it has signed a sponsorship deal with the Automobile Club of Southern California through 2007. Veteran pilot Gary Densham will also remain as driver to compete in his fourth season as a Force driver. Gary won’t stay with Force as long as the Auto Club has agreed to however. After the 2004 season Densham hopes to once again start his own team…

NASCAR Drivers Sold Short In Europe
January 14, 2004
It doesn’t surprise me as much as it apparently surprises David Poole of the Charlotte Observer that English racing rag AutoSport has drastically sold NASCAR talent short on its latest list of the greatest race car drivers in the world. The first NEXTEL cup driver (Ryan Newman) ranks 26th.

New And Old Teams Search For Sponsors
January 13, 2004
Derrike Cope and team owner Don Arnold have announced that they will combine efforts and try to qualify for some NEXTEL Cup races this year. Last year saw Arnold’s team attempt to qualify at 5 events and didn’t make a single show. But that’s not the interesting part of this article. The interesting part is regarding Arnold’s search for a sponsor…
“A guy like Jack Roush is asking for $18 million, where all I need is $6 million,” Arnold reflected. “I don’t have to make money with my race team. I can run a full season first-class with $6 million.”
Yeah…but you see Don, Jack Roush will actually get some TV airtime for the $18 million a company pays him to put their name on his car (Jeff Burton’s currently unsponsored mount for example). Whereas they would pay you $6 million to get pit passes and hospitality tents at a few events for their best clients. Those are two completely different value propositions…he’s comparing apples and oranges here…

Sauber Launch New Car - Ferrari Copy
January 13, 2004
Giancarlo Fisichella helped unveil the 2004 Sauber on Monday - and said he hoped to use it as a stepping stone for a move to one of the top teams. “One of the top teams?” Why who ever could he mean? Giancarlo will be doing some testing with Ferrari (with whom the Sauber squad is closely affiliated) as well as racing with Sauber this year.
About the car…well…compared to the splash that Williams’ FW26 made, this puppy is decidedly plain…essentially a copy of last years Ferrari. But hey, being a smaller team, Sauber doesn’t have the budget or the ability to take design risks like the big boys…

Play-off System Anger
January 12, 2004
Try reading this quote without raising your eyebrows.
What’s more, almost to a man, the drivers themselves said with various degrees of tact they hated the playoff idea. (Well, except Michael Waltrip of course. Waltrip has become such a mouthpiece of NASCAR that if Brian France shoved a stick in a frozen turd and called it a poopsicle, within five minutes Waltrip would find a way to appear on TV eating one, telling people it was delicious, and urging fans to stock their freezers full of them.) Oh, and the talking heads that work at NBC seem to love the idea. There’s a surprise.
Or this one.
If you ask me, and I ain’t saying anyone did, this whole playoff idea is Nothing But Crap. And you can abbreviate that NBC.
racingone.com: Open Up and Say Ah
The first story I read about Nascar “officially” going to a play-off system was on Friday, 1-9-04, and I was wondering how long it would take for some angry reactions to evolve.
Matt, I might not agree with every thing you say, but I sure do admire the way you say it!

Howard Dean Goes After NASCAR Dads
January 12, 2004
Democratic Presidential hopeful Howard Dean is going after the hot new “NASCAR Dads” demographic…
“Friends of Howard Dean have decided that the NASCAR Busch Series is the perfect vehicle by which to enhance the popularity and exposure of Howard Dean during his run for the Presidency. A presence in this series will also give his army of supporters a media forum to use to connect with the millions of race fans who are also potential voters. “
As if I don’t see enough of these guys on the news. Now I’ve got to watch his name flying around a race track too…
“No Bullshit Motor Homes…”
January 12, 2004
…says Mr. Richard Parry-Jones, for the Jaguar racing team this year. Don’t have the money, says he. They are so broke, they have to take Christian Klien and his 4 million dollar Red Bull sponsorship and let him drive a green cat this year.
It’s actually a voice of reason in an insane sport trying to point out the degree of lunacy of funding an F1 team. Couldn’t agree with you more Richard. Besides cutting out the bullshit motor homes, any other bright, constructive ideas on how to reduce spending?
