Luyendyk Jr to race in Daytona 24

(Scottsdale, AZ) — Arie Luyendyk Jr., Indy Racing League competitor and son of two-time Indy 500 winner Arie Luyendyk, will pilot the #9 Multimatic Ford Focus Daytona Prototype car in the upcoming Rolex 24 At Daytona for the SpeedSource team on January 29–February 1, 2004. Arie Jr. will be teamed with veteran endurance racers Mike Borkowski and Paul Mears Jr., with a fourth driver for the #9 team being announced in the near future.

LANSING, Mich. (Jan 3, 2004) — U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Frank J. Otte made several definitive decisions Tuesday, Dec. 30, as he approved the procedure submitted by CART, Inc. to sell its assets and accepted the Open Wheel Racing Series, LLC (”Open Wheel”) proposal to purchase said assets as a “qualified bid.” The proceeding was held in Indianapolis in the Birch Bayh Federal Building and Courthouse. No other buyers have indicated an interest in the CART assets to date.

IRL Challenges Nascar?

While I appreciate the writer’s boundless enthusiasm, I’m not sure if the IRL can come close to Nascar in fan support. With NEXTEL marketing the bejabbers out of the series, and the consistently poor TV ratings for the IRL, there needs to be a watershed change in the IRL to make the leap to the national prominence of Nascar. What that change is, is the million dollar question that is proving most ellusive.

Only if he manages not to hurt himself or another driver. This obsession with signing younger and inexperienced drivers to the top echelons of racing competition is down right asking for disaster. Mr. Purnell has high expectations for his youthful (20) driver. Any achievements will be due to his drivers will to impress his employers without a basis of understanding the risks he takes, due to his lack of experience.

Larry Curry, former team manager for John Menard and the man noted for brining Tony Stewart to prominence and to the IRL championship was indicted and jailed for defrauding John Menard of nearly a million dollars over a three-year period. To pay those debts to Menard most of Curry’s personal possessions sold at auction today on New Years day. It was a smorgasbord of luxury items and some great racing paraphernalia…
