OWRS Wins Bid For CART
January 28, 2004
Judge Otte has ruled in favor of OWRS’ bid to purchase CART from the bankruptcy court even though the IRL put in a higher bid.
The IRL upped its bid to $13.5 million today during an auction in U.S. Bankruptcy Court. CART’s creditors told Judge Frank Otte that they preferred OWRS lower bid of $3.2 million because it included acceptance of existing contracts and liabilities. IRL’s bid didn’t cover those.

Bidding For CART Underway
January 28, 2004
The bidding that will ultimately determine the fate of open wheel racing in the US is underway in an Indy courtroom. Apparently the two “teams” (IRL vs. OWRS) have been counter bidding each other and Judge Otte is determined…
“We’re going to decide it,” Otte said, “and we’re going to decide it today.”

Riggins To Replace Scott Goodyear For Daytona 24
January 28, 2004
Didn’t Scott Goodyear retire from racing IndyCars due to a broken back? He should be thanking his lucky stars that he can drive a sports car, let alone ANY car. So he got a ride in the Daytona 24 hours (with a great team and driver lineup)…and what does he do? Goes and plays hockey and gets injured. You can take the Canuck out of Canada, but you can’t take the Canada out of the Canuck. I hope the hockey game was worth it…

Memo Gets A Ride
January 28, 2004
It’s about time this guy found a ride again. I put Memo in a category with Alex Barron; great racers who just never had the corporate backing to get good rides on a consistent basis. Thankfully Alex has a full time ride with Cheever this year in the IRL, but this is definitely a step down for Memo. When he race a partial season for Ganassi in CART, I thought he did alright considering that he was stepping into a ride that wasn’t his. I’d love to know why Chip ditched him after some decent showings. Well, at least he’s racing…which is better than not…

I Thought Paul And Tony Were Pals?
January 28, 2004
Paul Gentilozzi has mentioned in the past that he considered Tony George a friend and that he felt Tony wouldn’t interfere with OWRS’ plans to buy out the Champ Car series…HA!!! This entire CART bankruptcy fiasco is taking on a mud-slinging feel that is reminiscent of a bid for the US Presidency…

Another Rival Series?
January 28, 2004
A1 Grand Prix, founded by His Highness Sheikh Maktoum Hasher Maktoum Al Maktoum and businessmen, Brian Menell and Antonio Teixeira, have contracted Lola cars to build machines for their new race series. The series will kick off in the winter of 2005, provided it receives FIA approval. While a winter series is something we (and many race fans) have been wanting for quite some time, I think you need to start a little smaller than going right after Bernie and the F1 gang. But before we pass judgment, let’s see if they can even get it off the ground…

Impact Of New Scoring System..
January 27, 2004
…on the final Winston Cup Championship. The first article I’ve come across that documents the actual difference in the outcome of last seasons Championship if run with the Chase for the Championship points system. As usual, some surprises and disappointments. But you can be sure the action along the way would have been vastly different. Better? Maybe. We’ll have to wait and see how it develops this year and compare.
