Jenson Flies At Jerez

February 10, 2004

I know it’s only testing, but after reading Mika Hakkinen’s put down of Jenson it was satisfying to see the McLarens in 5th and 6th and Jenson on top. The way Kimi is now concerned about the cars set up and integration with the Mercedes power plant has me smiling. Come race day in Melbourne, watch all the sand baggers fly!

Chevy Racing Notes & Quotes

February 9, 2004

DALE EARNHARDT JR., NO. 8 BUDWEISER CHEVROLET MONTE CARLO (PRE-QUALIFYING REMARKS) “It’s real windy right now, and chances are that the wind’s going to die down near the end of qualifying. So I don’t know if we’ll do real well. But you never know so we’ll just go out there and run and see what we end up with I ain’t really too worried about it. It’s going to be real tough to get the pole. The best thing you can hope for is just to get into the 125s. I’d like to get the pole. But I don’t know if were the best car here in qualifying. We’ve never run that great in qualifying at plate tracks except last year. So if we get lucky and get on the front row, great.”

Daytona 500 Qualifying Notes:

MARK MARTIN - No. 6 Viagra Taurus (Qualified 20th) - “It feels fine. Qualifying around this place is a non-issue, so I was just explaining to the guys a little bit about what it felt like. I just want to compliment this Viagra team and all these guys. They picked up today and everybody else has slowed down, so they did their homework well. The car is disappointing a little bit on speed here, but this is a car we really chose based on the way it drafted here in testing. I had a great race car last night in the Bud Shootout and I think that this car for 500 miles is gonna be better than that no matter how it looks here today. We’ll find out where we start in the 500 on Thursday with a little warm-up race, but I think for the long haul and as Speedweeks wears on, we’ll tend to forget about what happened here in time trials and start to feel really good about what we’ve got to race here with this Viagra Taurus.”

Biffle On Daytona 500 Pole

February 8, 2004

Greg Biffle took the pole for the Daytona 500 today with a 188.387 mph lap. Biffle won the July race at Daytona last year. The Yates duo of Dale Jarrett and Elliot Sadler remained strong with 5th and 2nd place qualifying positions respectively.

This first round of qualifying ensures a spot in the field for positions 1-36. Once qualifying is over, the field is set using a combination of timed laps and provisionals. The fastest 36 cars earn a place on time, while positions 37-43 are determined by a process which may include last season’s final owner’s standings, current owners standings and former champions. The provisionals are assigned in descending order, beginning with the highest ranking owner in the standings. The lone exception is the Daytona 500, which uses two qualifying races to determine the field.

South African Race Nearing Reality?

February 8, 2004

The press is sounding very optimistic about a Durban, South Africa street course being added to the Champcar 2004 schedule. One way to secure the future of the series is getting new venues to cough up large sanctioning fees to host an event. No matter what OWRS charges, it will be a bargain compared to getting an F1 event. This can only be good news for Champcar fans; now lets see how many teams and cars will make up the field.
