TOPEKA, Kan. — Greg Anderson won the $50,000 NHRA King Demon Crown Saturday during the O’Reilly NHRA Summer Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka.
Cory McClenathan, Whit Bazemore and Steve Johns will lead their respective categories into Sunday’s 11 a.m. eliminations at the $1.9 million race, the ninth of 23 events in the $50 million NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.
Brian Vickers Wakes Up the Press

The NEXTEL Wake-Up Call featured Brian Vickers, driver of the No. 25 GMAC Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Vickers was the highest qualifying Raybestos Rookie Of The Year candidate for the Coca-Cola 600 and will start 5th in Sunday’s race. He sat on the pole in Richmond two weeks ago and posted his first top 10 finish of the season (8th). He is currently 23rd in the point standings.

Bazemore Takes No. 1 In Friday Topeka Qualifying

TOPEKA, Kan. (May 28, 2004) - Whit Bazemore continues to burn up the nation’s drag strips with his Matco Tools Iron Eagle Dodge Stratus Funny Car, after qualifying No. 1 following two qualifying sessions on Friday for the O’Reilly NHRA Summer Nationals. His 4.792-second elapsed time at 323.19 mph topped the charts at both ends, with the fastest and quickest pass of the day. In the first session, he posted a 4.954/307.51.
Earnhardt Jr Heads Second Practice

Dale Earnhardt Jr led this morning’s first practice with a best lap (his second lap out) of 29.556 sec, 182.704 mph. Jimmie Johnson and Tony Stewart joined Earnhardt in a Chevy sweep of the top three positions with Brendan Gaughan putting his No. 77 Koday Dodge fourth. Robby Gordon clocked the fifth-quick time, closely followed by Ryan Newman and Kevin Harvick. Matt Kenseth, Greg Biffle and Mark Martin rounded out the top ten times.
Order Restored At Nurburgring Qualifying

Order was restored to the F1 world today at the Nurburgring when Michael Schumacher claimed his 60th career pole. The fight for second best was of course a bit more interesting with Takuma Sato starting second on the grid followed by last weeks winner in Monaco, Jarno Trulli starting 3rd. Sato’s teammate Jenson Button could only muster a 5th place time as he ran wide early in his qualifiying run.

Local resident Michael Culver was fastest in SCCA SPEED GT practice today at Lime Rock Park, in preparation for Monday”s Road Racing Classic Featuring the Mohegan Sun Grand Prix.
