Mother Nature tried her best to put a crimp in the activities at the NHRA Route 66 Nationals Saturday but in spite of that, records fell. Following Friday’s run, Dave Grubnic clocked a pass of 4.471 sec/331.77 mph pass in Top Fuel while Gary Scelzi backed up his 330.15 mph pass in Funny Car with a faster 330.55 mph attempt.
Sterling Marlin Takes NEXTEL Open

Sterling Marlin took advantage of a near-spin by leader Jamie McMurray to slip by McMurray and challenger Jeremy Mayfield to win the NASCAR NEXTEL Open at Lowe’s Motor Speedway Saturday evening. Marlin overcame damage in a crash on the green flag to earn advancement into the NASCAR NEXTEL Challenge.

Maybe the bosses of Champ Car Racing feel they need a little controversy and complaining to give the series a similar cachet to F1. What would an F1 race be without moans and groans from drivers and teams? In this case, the drivers and teams may have a point. While not claiming to be the brightest bulb in the bank, following the new qualifying format is nearly impossible. It would seem they are trying to turn it into rocket science.

JOLIET, Ill. - As promised, Gary Scelzi unleashed the HEMI power in his Oakley Dodge Stratus tonight and blasted to the first 330-mph Funny Car run in NHRA history. In a side-by-side match-up against his teammate Whit Bazemore in the second qualifying session, the man who established the national top-speed record of 329.18 mph here at Route 66 Raceway last September, surpassed that speed with a 330.15-mph run at 4.762 seconds, which placed him third in the field.
