Tony Eury Jr., car chief for Dale Earnhardt Jr. and the No. 8 Budweiser team, will again serve as front-tire changer in place of the injured Phil Drye this weekend in the NEXTEL All-Star Challenge at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Walt Smith, pit crew coordinator at Dale Earnhardt Inc., said it is unclear whether Drye will be back for the Coca-Cola 600 on May 30.

Bazemore Wins His First Race Of 2004

COMMERCE, Ga. - Crew chief Lee Beard, and the Matco Tools Iron Eagle Dodge Stratus team received all the accolades from driver Whit Bazemore today for providing him and his Funny Car the consistency they needed to win his first NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series race of the season, the 16th of his career, and the second here at Atlanta Dragway.

The No. 2 qualifier here first defeated Ron Capps in the first round with a 4.865/316.97 to Capps’ 4.945/265.33.

In the second round, Bazemore faced the Funny Car championship points leader Del Worsham, dismissing him with a 4.841/319.52 to Worsham’s tire-smoking 7.158/109.17.

McClenathan, Bazemore, Anderson and Savoie Earn NHRA POWERade Series Victories

COMMERCE, Ga. — Cory McClenathan snapped a two-year winless streak Sunday at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals presented by Pontiac at Atlanta Dragway.

Whit Bazemore, Greg Anderson and Angelle Savoie also were winners in their respective categories at the $1.8 million race, the seventh of 23 events in the $50 million NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.

McClenathan, who last won at Pomona Raceway in 2002, outran Clay Millican for the Top Fuel victory, the 28th of his career. McClenathan’s Berryman/Carrier Boyz dragster crossed the finish line in 4.651 seconds at 320.74 mph, just ahead of Millican’s charging 104+ Octane Boost dragster, which sped a 4.700 at 315.93.

Buddy Rice On Indy Pole

Buddy Rice, subbing for the injured Kenny Brack at Team Rahal, took the pole for the Indy 500 on Saturday. The question for him now is, can he break the curse of the Indy Pole and not spin off the track in the first turn, or even on the warm-up lap? Sometimes I wonder why they work so hard for the pole.
