Force, Kalitta, Anderson and Hines Sonoma Qualifiers

SONOMA, Calif. — John Force raced to the qualifying lead in Funny Car Friday at the FRAM Autolite Nationals at Infineon Raceway. Doug Kalitta, Greg Anderson and Andrew Hines also were leaders in their respective categories at the $1.5 million race, the 15th of 23 events in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series. Force powered his Castrol GTX Start Up Ford Mustang to a leading run of 4.823 seconds at 318.84 mph to top the 16-car field. If he holds on to the top position through Saturday’s two qualifying sessions (11 a.m. and 3 p.m.) he will earn the 120th No. 1 qualifying position of his career.

Mears Tops Front Row Joe for Pocono Pole

Casey Mears scored his first NASCAR NEXTEL Cup pole position Friday for Pocono Raceway’s Pennsylvania 500. Mears’ previous best qualifying was fourth at Chicago in 2003. Mears’ lap time of 52.411 sec/171.720 mph beat out Joe Nemechek’s earlier attempt of 52.431sec for the inside front row starting position.

VIRginia International Raceway’s 3.27-mile circuit has been busy recently, as a number of teams from the Grand American Road Racing Association’s Rolex Sports Car Series have been testing in advance of the VIR 400 scheduled for the weekend of Oct. 1-3.

In an expected yet almost retaliatory move, Williams have confirmed that Mark Webber will fill one of two race seats they have available for 2005. The announcement comes on the heels of the snubbing Williams received yesterday from Giancarlo Fisichella who passed over a Williams offer to join Renault instead.

Greg Anderson is well on his way to become one of those stories. However, if he and his team can maintain their winning ways and pile up championships there is still something that stands between him and the legendary greatness he may deserve - he runs Pro Stock in the NHRA.

However, not only is Anderson in a form or racing that gets far less coverage than NASCAR or Formula 1, he’s doing his work in a class of that series that gets even less respect…
