ELKHART LAKE, WI - JJ Lehto and Marco Werner clinched the 2004 American Le Mans Series LMP1 driver championship when they drove the ADT Champion Racing Audi R8 to victory in the Road America 500 at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis., on Sunday.
Werner, who was ALMS champion last year when he co-drove with Frank Biela, became the first driver in ALMS history to win two championships in the series’ top Prototype class. Lehto, who has raced in the series since its inception in 1999, wins his first title.

“Flash” Biffle Leads Roush One-Two at Michigan

Greg Biffle, driving the “Flash” Justice League-emblazoned National Guard Ford, led 73 of the 200 laps Sunday to take his second career win in NASCAR NEXTEL Cup racing. Mark Martin followed Biffle across the line in second place, 7.884 seconds behind his teammate, in a “Batman” labeled Pfizer Ford. Roush cars filled five of the top ten finishing positions.
The race which was slowed by a record-tieing nine cautions, saw Jimmie Johnson fail to finish for the third time in a row, costing him the point lead. Jeff Gordon’s seventh-place finish gave him the lead.

Scelzi Collects Second Spot in Final Memphis Qualifying

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Aug. 21, 2004) - Gary Scelzi, driving the HEMI-powered Oakley Dodge Stratus Funny Car, pulled out a stout pass in the final qualifying session for the O’Reilly Mid-South NHRA Nationals today and even gave his teammate and No. 1 qualifier Whit Bazemore a scare, with his stellar 4.863-second pass at 310.20 mph. This run placed Scelzi in second, just a tick behind Bazemore’s No. 1 pass of 4.862 seconds. Bazemore then surpassed that run with a 4.856, and Scelzi held on to No. 2.

(Aug. 21, 2004) - Whit Bazemore, defending Funny Car champion here at Memphis Motorsports Park, grabbed his second straight No. 1 qualifying position for this event, his fourth of the 2004 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series season, and the 28th of his career, with a 4.856-second pass at 306.26 mph.
