Pit Stop Rule Modified For Denver and Beyond

Champ Car has changed it controversial mandatory pit stop rule after many driver claimed that it changed their race strategy at Road America. Under the revised rules one mandatory pit stop under green or yellow flag conditions will be required in a specified lap window during all Champ Car events. All cars will have to take fuel and tires in this stop and it will now be the only mandatory stop.
DSR Adds R&D Funny Car for U.S. Nationals & Rest of 2004

INDIANAPOLIS (Aug. 11, 2004) - Multi-team owner Don Schumacher today announced he will add a third Funny Car to the Don Schumacher Racing stable as a research and development vehicle for the remainder of the 2004 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series season, beginning with the NHRA U.S. Nationals Sept. 1-6.

Possibly, if one reads between the lines in these comments from Rick Hendrick (team owner) and driver Jeff Gordon, NASCAR and possibly the George family (owners of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway) were somewhat taken aback by Gordon’s stopping on the front straight and not driving directly to Victory Lane. A lot of speculation centered on the possibility that Gordon would be fined or docked points for not following NASCAR’s ever-evolving protocols. Just a few minutes after the Hendrick statement was posted, we located the NASCAR response so it’s attached after the Hendrick statement. (IMHO it still sounds like NASCAR will not allow this in the future.)

KASEY KAHNE (No. 9 Dodge Dealers/UAW Dodge) NOTE: Kahne, a 24-year-old driver from Enumclaw, Wash., finished fourth Sunday in the Brickyard 400. He finished third on Aug. 1 at Pocono and his back-to-back top-five finishes have propelled him to 11th in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Standings, 31 points behind 10th-place Ryan Newman and one point ahead of Evernham Motorsports teammate Jereemy Mayfield. Kahne is also running away with the Raybestos Rookie of the Year title, enjoying a 250-185 advantage over his nearest challenger.
