Don’t get me wrong. There is a certain joie de vive to Southern California that I deeply appreciate, but running a 500-mile race on Labor Day weekend just doesn’t resonate. What used to be a NASCAR tradition has been replaced by a poor facsimile, and it’s noticeable even to the most newbie fan.

Former Benetton mechanic Steve Matchett has written a new book, The Chariot Makers: Assembling the Perfect Formula 1 Car. True to his usual style, it is a breezy, informal, and very readable book. While perhaps too light on detail to satisfy the most hardcore mechanic, it’s aimed at those of us who merely appreciate the engineering that goes into race cars, rather than understand it.

Doug Kalitta (Top Fuel), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Chip Ellis (Pro Stock Bike) also led qualifying in their respective categories at the $2.6 million NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event.

Brian Vickers scored his second pole of the season in qualifying for the California Speedway Pop Secret 500. Vickers’ time beat Jeremy Mayfield’s by .217 second. Bill Elliott, making one of his rare entries in the 2004 season in his own No. 98 Dodge, qualified third, just .012 second behind Mayfield.
