That is my reaction to reading the news that CBS will broadcast Champ Car races next year. That’s the good news.
New Teams, Same Old Problems

On top of the Midland Group’s F1 team entry for 2006 comes word of another new team on the grid; the Dubai F1 Group. There must be something in that desert water and Canadian air that blocks common sense and basic computational skills. New teams in F1 just do not add up, even using new fuzzy math!
Renault Now, Sauber Later?

The world of F1 is rife with speculation on the future of Jacques Villeneuve and Renault, and the season ending race in Brazil: Of more concern to Jacques should be his future with Sauber. Renault may dump him now, will Sauber drop him later?

Last night’s ASA race, while not without its on-track drama, led to even more drama in the paddock as track equipment blocked ASA trucks and equipment trailers in their parking spots in the garage area.
NHRA Rookies Line Up

The NHRA released the top candidates in line for the 2004 Auto Club of Southern California Road to the Future Award, honoring the year’s top rookie in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series. This year’s crop of nominees is just about as good as they come. With all three drivers having great years the choice could be a nail biter all the way down to the wire, right? Not in my opinion.

Mark Martin headed the tables after first practice on Friday, with a best lap of 29.710 sec/181.757 mph in his No. 6 Ford. Next fastest in the first session was Kasey Kahne’s Dodge, just .019 sec back, then Carl Edwards a scant .003 sec behind Kahne on the charts.

STP, Petty Ent. Unveil 50-Year Anniversary Car

Long time Richard Petty sponsor STP has teamed with AutoZone to announce a donation of up to $50,000 to the Petty Family’s Victory Junction Gang Camp. The donation, made in celebration of STP’s 50th anniversary, will allow STP and AutoZone to host a special “Family Weekend” for children with chronic or life-threatening illness in the Spring of 2005.
Rocketman Newman Returns at Charlotte

“Rocketman” Ryan Newman returned with a vengeance in qualifying for Saturday’s UAW/GM 500. Newman wheeled the No. 12 Dodge to a new track record qualifying lap of 28.590 sec/188.877 mph. The Rushville, Indiana native’s lap bettered the old record, set in May by Jimmie Johnson at 28.869 sec/187.052 mph.

Mark Martin, driver of the No. 6 Viagra Taurus, announced this afternoon that the 2005 season will mark the final time he will race for the Nextel Cup. Car owner Jack Roush, NASCAR President Mike Helton and Martin all participated in a press conference prior to Friday afternoon’s practice session.
