Worsham, Kalitta, Anderson and Ellis Qualifying Leaders Thursday at Auto Club NHRA Finals

POMONA, Calif. — Del Worsham raced to the qualifying lead in Funny Car Thursday at the 40th annual Auto Club NHRA Finals at Pomona Raceway.
Doug Kalitta, Greg Anderson and Chip Ellis also were qualifying leaders at the $1.7 million race, the final of 23 events in the $50 million NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.

As we mentioned here recently, Patrick Carpentier was slated to join Eddie Cheever’s Red Bull Racing team and run in the IRL in 2005 and beyond. Official word of this move came yesterday.

NASCAR recently announced that it will allow liquor sponsorships on their cars in 2005 and the NHRA would be foolish to not follow suit. For years NHRA teams have complained that corporate America needs to wake up and see the outstanding sponsorship value that an NHRA race team provides. Because the door has been opened by NASCAR to allow this type of sponsorship, the NHRA needs to walk in the door right behind their big brother from Daytona.

Mark Martin Heads Homestead-Miami Tests

Mark Martin headed the second day of testing at Homestead-Miami Speedway Wednesday. With only a pair of races left on the schedule, Martin’s best lap was 30.55 sec/176.759 mph, beating out Jeff Gordon by .14 sec.
The first day’s tests saw Gordon atop the charts at 31.00 sec/174.194 mph, followed by Dale Earnhardt Jr and Martin third.

NASCAR announced Wednesday morning that it will now allow sponsorship from distilled spirits for teams in the sport. “We felt the time was right to allow distilled spirits companies into NASCAR,” said Mike Helton, president of NASCAR. “Attitudes have changed, and spirits companies have a long record of responsible advertising. Any spirits company involved in NASCAR will have marketing campaigns strongly grounded in responsibility and will follow advertising and marketing guidelines set by NASCAR that are consistent with the Distilled Spirits Council’s advertising code.
Harvick, Kahne Fined For Phoenix Incident

Kevin Harvick and Kasey Kahne were both fined for their on-track actions following the checkered flag Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway. In addition to the fines, both were placed on probation for the rest of the month of November. Tony Eury Sr was fined for a windshield on Dale Earnhardt Jr’s car which did not meet the required NASCAR minimum thickness. Here is the text of NASCAR’s release announcing the penalties:
