Most open-wheel drivers get very little respect from the NASCAR drivers, but Mario Andretti still turns heads down at Daytona. He returned to the storied track this week to reunite with other Daytona 500 champions.
‘Mikey’ and Tony Stewart Win Duels

Michael Waltrip won another race at Daytona, pushed across the finish line by teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. This time, ‘Mikey’ captured the first of the Gatorade Duel 150-mile qualifying races to set the field for Sunday’s Daytona 500. In the second race, Jimmie Johnson seemed on the way to a continuation of his late-season success in 2004, only to have Kevin Harvick’s Chevy make contact with his car, starting a multi-car melee that sent several front-runners to the garage.

Bourdais on IROC Pole, Says He Doesn’t Want It

The 2004 Champ Car World Series Champion, Sebastian Bourdais, drew the pole for the first IROC race at Daytona. Most drivers would be thrilled, but Sebastian says he didn’t want the pole for his first IROC race. Who can really blame the guy, though? We all know the boys from NASCAR are going to team up on the open-wheel guys and eat them as a tasty snack as they prepare for Sunday’s main course.

Dale Jarrett, fresh off drawing the pole for Saturday’s Budweiser Shootout, set fastest time in qualifying for the 2005 Daytona 500. Jarrett’s time of 47.793 sec/188.312 mph beat out Jimmie Johnson’s 47.829/188.170 lap. Johnson in turn beat out team co-owner Jeff Gordon by only .004 second. Jeff Green’s lap was spoiled by a blown engine, making his the only “no time” of the day.
