Kurt Busch Dominant at Subway Fresh 500

Defending NEXTEL Cup champion Kurt Busch continued the Roush and Hendrick domination of the 2005 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup season by leading 219 of the 312 laps in the Subway Fresh 500 Saturday evening at Phoenix International Raceway.

The race, for 500 kilometers or 312 miles, was delayed at the start by rain at Phoenix International Raceway. Kurt Busch won the race, leading 219 of the 312 laps. Michael Waltrip placed second.

Jeff Gordon took the pole, ahead of Kurt Busch and Greg Biffle in their Fords. Ryan Newman was the highest-qualifying Dodge, in seventh position for the Saturday evening twi-night feature race.
Jeff Gordon Takes Phoenix Pole Over Roush Pair

Jeff Gordon, already a pole winner this season, added another notch to his belt Friday with his 53rd career NASCAR NEXTEL Cup pole position. Running 31st in the order, Gordon’s better lap of two was a quick 26.931 sec/133.675 mph effort, beating out his friend Kurt Busch whose 27.016/133.254 lap was good enough for second. Starting third will be Busch’s fellow Roush driver Greg Biffle, at 27.035/133.161. Starting beside Biffle will be Bobby Labonte.

This week’s NASCAR NEXTEL Teleconference featured Tony Stewart, driver of the No. 20 Home Depot Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Heading to Phoenix, Stewart has four top-10 finishes in six career starts at Phoenix International Raceway - including a victory there in 1999. Stewart is one of the drivers who has qualified for the 21st annual NASCAR NEXTEL All-Star Challenge on May 21st at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Stewart will also be making his second appearance behind the wheel of the No. 47 Chevrolet All Star Silverado there on May 20 in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event. He is bouncing back from last Sunday’s crash at Texas which left him with minor burns on his right elbow and thigh, but he is doing fine and definitely plans to compete in both the Cup and Busch races next weekend at Phoenix.

The Morgan-Dollar Motorsports entry, one of the Chevrolet All Star Silverado entries in 2005, will carry associate sponsorship from the name sponsor of the race, Quaker Steak & Lube restaurants.
