He came back from three laps down, passing the leader twice under racing conditions and earning one “lucky dog” pass onto the lead lap before taking advantage of traffic to move into the lead late in the race and stay there, holding off Kasey Kahne’s challenge. Jeff Gordon, overcoming fate that put him three laps down early in the race, held off Kasey Kahne to win Sunday’s Advance Auto Parts 500 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup race. The win was Gordon’s fifth at the tiny paperclip-shaped half mile and his career 71st.
