FONTANA, Calif. — Mexico’s Luis Diaz will have a birds-eye view of the starter’s stand when the green flag drops on his 14th career Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series race, as he placed the No. 01 CompUSA Chip Ganassi Racing Lexus Riley on the pole position for Sunday’s Ferrari Maserati 400 at California Speedway (SPEED Channel, Live, 4 p.m. ET).

Richard Childress, one of NASCAR’s most successful modern era team owners, stated recently that a driver should not be penalized for the team’s misdeeds. Kevin Harvick, driver of the No. 29 Chevrolet out of Childress’ stable, was penalized 25 driver points after his crew chief, Todd Berrier, installed an illegal fuel cell prior to qualifying for the Las Vegas race. Berrier was fined $25,000 and suspended for four races. Childress lost 25 team owner points.

Elliott Sadler earned his first pole position for a NASCAR NEXTEL Cup race since 2003 by .034 second over Dave Blaney. Carl Edwards came down off of his high from last weekend’s double victories by crashing his primary car in qualifying and will start dead last in a backup car.
