How To Trash Your Own Legend
May 29, 2005
The legacy of the Foyt name in auto racing and at the Indianapolis 500 is being tarnished, and AJ Foyt is the one to blame. The actions of AJ Foyt IV at the 500 today are questionable at best. Foyt IV came down into Bruno Junqueira in a turn sending Bruno hard into the wall and out of the race. It is unknown at the time of this writing whether or not Bruno will be able to compete in his normal Champ Car ride next weekend. Bruno was just about past Foyt IV and Foyt admitted that his spotter mentioned that there was a car inside. There is no reason that a car so far off the pace should have clipped a potential race winner.

Seeing Red
May 29, 2005
Multiple car teams in the NHRA are a reality of the modern evolution of the sport of drag racing. I am not so delusional to think that these team owners are not going to abandon a formula that has proven to be successful. On the other side of the coin, I wish teams and their drivers would just come out and admit when there are team orders to take a dive when facing each other. Although I have no proof of which teams intentionally lay down for one another, there seems to be some suspicious activity going on lately.

The Biggest Day In Racing
May 28, 2005
It’s just after 9pm eastern on the Saturday night before, what I think, is the biggest day of the auto racing season. It feels like Christmas Eve does to a 6-year-old. What other day can you wake up with F1 in Germany at 7am (if you are living in the Eastern time zone that is), have lunch at Indy for the “Greatest Spectacle In Racing” and then close the day down with a nice long NASCAR race from stock car heaven - Charlotte, North Carolina? Then, the cherry on top of it all, if you are really dedicated, you can catch the NHRA final eliminations from Topeka!
Back Home Again
May 28, 2005
Back home again in Indiana. I arrived to low key mood and little hype. The 500 still dominates the landscape the general conversation, but it seems less obvious than in the past. Here in the Mecca of Motorsports, it’s all Danica All the Time. A few mentions here and there of others, but the focus is on her and Rahal right now.
Who’s Tired of Danica Mania?
May 28, 2005
On the eve of the Indianapolis 500, you don’t have to be a major motor sports enthusiast to have heard the name Danica Patrick. In case you have been living in a cave for the past three months, Patrick is the twenty-three-year-old driver of the Rahal/Letterman owned car and is the only woman in the 33-car lineup. Patrick is only the fourth female to race in the big event at the Brickyard in its 89-year history, following the likes of Janet Guthrie, Lyn St. James and Sarah Fisher. So with all this hype and excitement surrounding Patrick I say, “So what?” Apparently the women in drag racing are feeling a little bit like Rodney Dangerfield. No respect.
Newman Flops to Outside Row
May 28, 2005
Ryan Newman and his Penske Racing South crew chief Matt Borland announced their decision to start Sunday’s 400-lap, 600 mile Coca Cola 600. “It’s a no-brainer” Newman explained. “We’re going to start on the outside. I didn’t know you had a choice until David Poole [writer for the Charlotte Observer] said something about it Thursday night after we’d won the pole. It’s nice to know we have that choice.”
Coca Cola 600 Saturday First Practice Notes
May 28, 2005
Saturday’s first practice session saw speeds far slower than those turned in qualifying for the weekend’s 600-mile race. Jimmy Johnson topped the charts in the session, followed by Elliott Sadler and Ryan Newman.
