Thursday at Lowe’s Motor Speedway was a busy day. Several press conferences plus qualifying led to a data overload. Here, thanks to numerous sources, is a collection of notes and quotes. Ryan Newman shattered the old track qualifying record, turning a lap of nearly 193 mph.
Newman Rockets to Lowe’s Pole Record

Ryan Newman, for the second week in a row, will start on pole at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Last week, Newman’s crew had to change four tires in a pit stop during his qualifying run for the NASCAR NEXTEL All-Star Challenge. This week, Newman took to the track by himself, running on the newly-ground (levigated, in track parlance) surface. Newman’s time eclipsed the short-lived record set by Mike Bliss of 28.540 sec/189.208 mph. Newman’s lap time ws 27.981 sec at 192.988 mph. In all, the top 18 cars broke Bliss’ record before the night was done.

Andretti Green has a stranglehold on the 2005 IRL season. So far this year, they won 3 of the 4 races and swept the top four spots on the Streets of St. Petersburg. Now, we are at Indy. The Speedway is a place of ghosts and perhaps the home of auto racing’s Curse. The Red Sox shook their demons last year by beating the Yankees and winning the World Series. Can the Andretti’s - through their AGR ownership - shake The “Can’t Win Indy” Curse of their own?

Kimi Raikkonen was the class of the field this weekend at Monaco. He cruised to an authorataive win in front of Williams teammates Nick Heidfeld and Mark Webber. Series points leader Fernando Alonso struggled late in the race but managed to hold onto 4th place. Again this weekend reigning World Champion Michael Schumacher was not much of a factor and garned only 1 point in 8th place.
