Under a nearly full moon, Scott Riggs brought out the first caution of the evening by hitting the wall in Turn Four on the first lap of the NEXTEL Open, flattening the right side of the car before even one lap had completed. The crew pushed the car behind the wall. Morgan Shepherd and Jason Leffler joined Riggs on pit road after one more lap.

INDIANAPOLIS, Friday, May 20, 2005 - Thirty-two driver-car combinations totaled a month-high 2,828 laps (7,070 miles — one of the busiest practice days in the past five years) without incident as qualified drivers tinkered with their race set-ups and tested how cars responded to various fuel loads. Teams with unqualified cars were seeking that extra measure of speed.
