Kurt Busch, starting from outside on the front row, swept into the lead and almost never looked at the rear bumper of another car all day in the Pennsylvania 500. At the earlier Pocono event, Carl Edwards gave team owner Jack Roush the team’s first win of the season at the triangular speedway.

Sam Hornish survived his “big moment” during the race and went on to claim the win at the IRL’s Milwaukee ABC Supply/AJ Foyt 225. Unfortunately his big moment involved team mate Helio Catroneves and ended Helios’ effort in the outside wall of turn two. I’m sure The Captain will be pleased!

Medlen, Thomas Pull Down No. 1 qualifiers in Funny Car, Pro Stock
KENT, Wash. — Larry Dixon highlighted a record-setting four rounds of qualifying action for the 18th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Nationals by setting both ends of the track record to earn the top qualifying position entering Sunday’s final eliminations.
Track records were set across the board — in all three pro categories for both speed and elapsed time — at the $1.4 million race, the 14th of 23 events in the $50 million NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.

Kurt Busch and Mark Martin put their Fords second and third on the grid for Sunday’s race. “I was really surprised. We picked up over a second-and-a-half from yesterday’s practice,” Busch said after qualifying.

Dodge driver Jamie McMurray qualified on the pole for the race, followed by Kurt Busch, Mark Martin, Ryan Newman and Ricky Rudd. Tony Stewart put the top qualifying Chevrolet in sixth position for the start of the race.
McMurray Takes Pennsylvania 500 Pole

Jamie McMurray, just days after the Chip Ganassi team announced it would be picking up the option for him to drive the No. 42 Dodge in 2006, knocked Mark Martin off the pole for Sunday’s Pennsylvania 500 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup race. McMurray’s time of 53.330 sec/168.761 mph beat out Kurt Busch by .072 sec and Martin by an additional .048 sec.
