NHRA Sport Compact: Racing Not The Only Appeal

Hardcore drag racing fans reject the NHRA Xplōd Sport Compact Series. Sad but true. Those that were raised on carburetors and American muscle cars from Detroit would never be caught dead at a drag race full of Japanese imports. Because this is the case, the NHRA needs to understand that marketing this series the same way you market your NHRA POWERade series is a big mistake.

As a Funny Car driver, Ed “the Ace” McCulloch , has won the U.S. Nationals five times (1971, 1972, 1980, 1988 and 1990), more than any other Funny Car driver in the history of this event. He has also won the U.S. Nationals in the Top Fuel class in 1992, giving him a total of six victories at this prestigious event, the crown jewel of the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.

There is nothing like the smile on the face of a first time winner. Part-time driver “Hot” Rod Fuller won his first NHRA POWERade race in the Top Fuel division, beating defending series champion Tony Schumacher in the process. Although Fuller was grinning ear-to-ear on Sunday in Memphis, Tenn. you had to think that crew chief Lee Beard was smiling just as wide for another reason.
