As both George and the ABC broadcast noted, the Target Chip Ganassi Racing season has been downright woeful: 0 poles, 0 wins, 17 DNFs. That’s a long way from the days of true dominance with Zanardi and Montoya. The Ganassi approach has always been to win and win a lot, and they’ve always tried to “develop new” drivers (remember when Jimmy Vasser was there?), but given the complete lack of success, it seems something more must be going on.

Mayfield Takes Michigan on Mileage

Jeremy Mayfield became the tenth winner in NASCAR’s top echelon by winning the GFS Marketplace 400 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup race at Michigan International Speedway Sunday. Pole winner Joe Nemechek finished eighth. Scott Riggs wound up a career-best second in the No. 10 Chevy, followed by Matt Kenseth, Carl Edwards and Tony Stewart in the top five. Tire failures and overheating engines punctuated the race before Mayfield stalled his car in the front straight grass with two blow tires after victory donuts in front of the crowd.

MEMPHIS - Tony Schumacher is not going to let his POWERade Series Top Fuel championship go without a fight.

The pilot of the U.S. Army dragster, second in the POWERade Series standings, set the top qualifying mark of 4.610 seconds at 309.56 mph on Friday and it held up through the final two rounds of Saturday at the 18th annual O’Reilly Mid-South Nationals at Memphis Motorsports Park.

Joe Nemechek On Michigan Pole

A rain delay in qualifying didn’t stop Joe Nemechek from taking pole today at Michigan International Speedway. “Front Row Joe” took pole with an average lap speed of 191.581 mph. While this is a good day for Nemechek, he comes to Michigan 17th in points and will most likely not make the Chase for the Nextel Cup. Jeff Gordon will start second and Kasey Kahne third.
