Tony Stewart Steals New Hampshire Pole

Tony Stewart, heading into the first race in NASCAR’s ‘Chase’ with the point lead, will start the race in the lead after edging out Jeff Gordon for pole by 0.015 sec. Stewart’s lap time of 29.043 sec/131.143 mph edged out Gordon’s Chevrolet for pole by the thinnest of margins.
Wallace Heads Loudon’s Happy Hour

Rusty Wallace’s Miller Lite No. 2 Dodge very appropriately headed the time sheets at the end of “Happy Hour” final practice at New Hampshire International Speedway Friday. Wallace’s best lap was timed at 29.956 sec/127.146 mph. Just behind Wallace, only 0.061 sec back was rookie Kyle Busch with the Kelloggs No. 5 Chevrolet. First practice was headed by Jeff Gordon, whose crew chief, Robbie Loomis, has moved to the No. 48 team as a consultant until the end of the season, when he will leave to work at Petty Enterprises as executive vice president for competition. Gordon’s time was slightly quicker than Wallace’s, at 29.661 sec/128.411 mph.

In a surprise to virtually nobody, Robbie Loomis, crew chief for Jeff Gordon’s No. 24 Chevrolet the last few years, has announced that he will leave Hendrick Motorsports at the end of the 2005 season to return to Petty Enterprises.

The purchase of Minardi by Red Bull is one of the most exciting pieces of news for the future of F1 in along time. With shrinking grids and the absence of new entries, this may well become one of the most coveted seats for new drivers entering the formula. No criticism of Paul Stoddart, the financial reality of operating a F1 team, particularly an independent, has meant that all too often he was forced to run driver whose wallet outweighed their talent. While Webber & Alonso were the notable exceptions to this, Alonso’s ride was heavily subsidised by Briatore/Renault.
