In the spirit of the NFL season kicking off tonight, the NHRA took a page from the gridiron to make things right. After Matt Smith was declared the winner of the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals Pro Stock Motorcycle category, the NHRA reversed the call and awarded the win to Steve Johnson. Apparently the timing mechanism in Johnson’s lane malfunctioned despite the ESPN replay clearly showed Johnson crossed the stripe first.

CLERMONT, Ind. — Del Worsham raced to the Funny Car victory Monday at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals and in the process pocketed more than $225,000 for the weekend at the world’s most prestigious drag race.
Larry Dixon, Greg Anderson and Matt Smith also were winners at the $2.6 million race, the 18th of 23 events in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.

Donald Thomas won at Lakewood Speedway (Ga.) on dirt on Nov. 16, 1952 at the age of 20 years, 4 months and 6 days. He was four days older than Busch.

Kyle Busch led the most laps of any driver in winning the Sony HD 500 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup race Sunday evening at California Speedway. In taking the checkered flag first in his 31st career start, led 95 laps in a race that went overtime after a late caution for a crash on lap 247, involving Robby Gordon, Scott Riggs, Scott Wimmer, Jeff Burton and Sterling Marlin that gave challenger Greg Biffle one final shot at the win.
