Jeff Gordon, taking the lead late in the race, held off a determined Tony Stewart for his second race of the 2005 season at NASCAR’s oldest and shortest track. Gordon’s win came after Stewart dominated the race, leading 283 of the 500 laps for a five point bonus. Gordon’s teammate (actually, Gordon is co-owner) Jimmie Johnson finished a close third to Stewart but never led a lap, dropping him from tied to fifteen points behind Stewart in the chase for the NEXTEL Cup at the end of the season.

Stewart Leads Martinsville Record Assault

Tony Stewart led ten more drivers in besting the old track record at Martinsville Speedway. Setting a new track record of 19.306 sec/98.083 mph, Stewart scored his third pole of 2005 and tenth career pole with his third Martinsville inside front row start. Ricky Rudd held the fastest lap time for a long time in qualifying until Stewart’s late session run. Rudd’s lap was a whsker-thin .018 sec slower than Stewart’s.
