As A1 Grand Prix reaches its halfway point in its inaugural season of the World Cup of Motorsports its time to make an assessment of the first six events held to date. Before I get into any subjective critique lets first look at the numbers from the first six events that include 12 races.

The storyline for Sunday’s 30 lap Feature event for A1GP’s Grand Prix of Nations promised many varied endings. Would Switzerland’s Neel Jani become only the third driver to sweep both races of an event. Could Team Brazil’s Nelson Piquet Jr. or Ireland’s Ralph Firman rebound from mechanical problems that surfaced during the mornings Sprint race? And the most interesting question of all, could Nicolas Lapierre bring his Team France entry from 7th on the grid to the top step for the 9th time in 12 races?

Neel Jani Breaks Stranglehold on A1GP Podiums

Maybe it was an extra boost created by having your birthday fall on race day. Or finally a chink in Team France’s armor has shown itself. Whatever the cause, the promise given by Neel Jani’s pole winning efforts Saturday were fullfilled in Sunday’s A1GP Dubai Sprint race as the Team Switzerland driver led from wire to wire in taking the 15 lap event.
Jani Captures A1GP Dubai Pole Position

The front of row for Sunday’s A1GP Dubai grid will mirror that of round 5 in Malaysia with Team Switzerland’s Neel Jani capturing his second pole of the year trailed by Team France and Team Ireland. Jani will be looking to reverse his Sepang fortunes when he lost the lead to “all conquering” Team France on the penultimate lap of that Feature event. He will also be looking to break France’s string of eight consecutive wins.

The WMSC (World Motor Sport Council) issues it’s decree for Formula One regulations for 2008. If this doesn’t stiffen the resolve of the GPMA to move forward with their own series, nothing will.
