Jeff Burton won pole position for the 2006 Daytona 500, beating out Jeff Gordon with a lap of 47.581 sec/189.151 mph on a cold, windy Florida afternoon. Winds affected many drivers’ efforts, dieing down for some and blowing against them for others. Gordon’s lap of 47.650 sec/188.877 mph had him just seven thousandths of a second ahead of Dale Jarrett, fastest “non-qualifier” for the Daytona 500. The remainder of the race lineup will be determined by results of the Twin 150s to be held Thursday.
