The NHRA has had a long standing rule that in order to officially recognize a national performance record, either elapsed time or speed, the driver is required to successfully ‘back up’ the run within one percent of the number. This practice is archaic and outdated and is holding the sport back.

Whenever a woman climbs into a race car the national media falls all over themselves trying to put a microphone in her face. Let me correct that last statement, any time a woman climbs into a race car that is not in drag racing, the media anoints her as the next big thing. Women have been drag racing for years with little to no fanfare and it is about time we as media members recognize them.

Jeff Burton won pole position for the 2006 Daytona 500, beating out Jeff Gordon with a lap of 47.581 sec/189.151 mph on a cold, windy Florida afternoon. Winds affected many drivers’ efforts, dieing down for some and blowing against them for others. Gordon’s lap of 47.650 sec/188.877 mph had him just seven thousandths of a second ahead of Dale Jarrett, fastest “non-qualifier” for the Daytona 500. The remainder of the race lineup will be determined by results of the Twin 150s to be held Thursday.
