Jimmie Johnson Wins Las Vegas

Jimmie Johnson became the 2006 season’s first repeat winner in leading only about the last hundred yards of the UAW/DaimlerChrysler 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Matt Kenseth dominated the race, leading 146 of the 270 laps but the race went into overtime after a yellow flag on lap 265 for debris from Kenny Wallace’s car. Kenseth’s engine had problems that dropped him behind Johnson as Johnson swept around him approaching the checkered flag, winning by only a fender’s length at the line.

Biffle Gives Roush First Las Vegas Pole

California’s two DNFs will start the Las Vegas round of NASCAR’s NEXTEL Cup Series on the front row. Greg Biffle won the pole over reigning series champion Tony Stewart after both drivers had problems in the most recent race on the schedule. Biffle’s pole is the first for team owner Jack Roush at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. A lap of 31.322 sec/172.403 mph beat out Stewart by 0.061 sec. Following Biffle and Stewart, Jimmie Johnson and Kyle Busch will fill the second row of the grid.Kasey Kahne, after ‘winning’ the last practice session with a lap time of 31.483 sec/171.521 mph, slipped to fifth in qualifying with a lap of 31.569 sec/171.054 mph.
