Tire Testing Completed at Lowe’s

Goodyear’s tire testing at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, extended from last week’s two days of testing, is over. Goodyear representatives at the track revealed to this writer that they have now learned enough to go back to Akron and start building tires for the open test sessions in a few weeks. The same tires recommended for the open test will be recommended for the races next month, barring a major surprise.

Tony Stewart (’Smoke’) got to climb the fence at Martinsville, after dominating the DirecTV 500 at NASCAR’s oldest remaining Speedway. He held off Jeff Gordon’s challenge in a three-lap final green flag run to take the checkers by 1.083 seconds.

BAYTOWN, Texas — Top Fuel driver Brandon Bernstein scored his ninth career victory Sunday at the $1.7 million O’Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals, the fourth of 23 races on the $50 million POWERade Drag Racing Series. His 4.534 at 329.83 mph beat points leader Melanie Troxel.

Fernando Alonso made a superior first lap charge, passed the hapless Jenson Button for P1 on the restart after the first safety car period, and stayed there all race long. Except for the demolition derby race behind the leaders including four safety car periods, the race was effectively over at the end of lap 1.

BAYTOWN, Texas — Veteran Top Fuel racer Cory McClenathan is the surprise No. 1 qualifier at the 19th annual O’Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals presented by Pennzoil at Houston Raceway Park. McClenathan posted a class-leading 4.531 at 329.42 mph Saturday in the final time trial of the $2 million race to earn his 30th career low qualifier award.
