Lowe’s Test Sessions Topped by Rookies
May 2, 2006
The first day of open NASCAR NEXTEL Cup testing at Lowe’s Motor Speedway unveiled some interesting items. A pair of rookies, Denny Hamlin and Clint Bowyer took their Chevrolets to the top of the charts in testing. The day was not completely uneventful however, as Paul Menard was the first to taste the SAFER barrier. Menard slapped the wall in Turn Two after what spotters reported might have been a right front tire problem. It was eventually learned that something on the car had rubbed through the right front tire, causing the crash.

Talladega Notes & Quotes.

Jimmie Johnson won Monday’s rain-delayed Aaron’s 499 in front of nearly the same size crowd that showed up Sunday before the weather interfered. Elliott Sadler and Jeff Gordon had the dominant cars but both dropped well back in the lead pack on the final lap. Johnson moved back into the point lead with his win before the teams head to Richmond, VA for Saturday night’s short track race. Here, thanks to all the team and manufacturer sources, are driver and team notes and quotes from the race.
Talladega Monday to Jimmie Johnson
May 1, 2006
“Monday, Monday”… so goes the old The Mamas and The Papas song. Talladega Superspeedway ought to schedule their races for Mondays. The track’s stands were filled, even after the rainout Sunday, with over 100,000 fans calling in “sick” at work to hold their seats to watch Jeff Gordon lead the most laps and Jimmie Johnson win the race after 22 drivers led with 56 official lead changes. Johnson’s win gave him the point lead again, just ahead of last week’s leader Kenseth.
