Rookie driver Denny Hamlin, driving for Joe Gibbs Racing, has swept pole positions for both NASCAR NEXTEL Cup races at Pocono Raceway this year. Here, thanks to assorted team and manufacturer sources, are the collected notes and quotes after qualifying Friday afternoon: DENNY HAMLIN: Well, our car was really good today in practice for sure. When we did our mock qualifying run in June, I think we were in the mid 20s or so. I just went out there and made, you know, a crazy lap or something like that. I told Mike that I know how good our car is this time around. I didn’t know how good it was that time around. So I was going out there and if I wrecked it, I wrecked it; if I didn’t, I didn’t.

Hamlin on Pocono Pole (Again)

July 21, 2006

Rookie Denny Hamlin won his second Pocono fast qualifier trophy and third career Busch pole, beating out Ryan Newman’s time by 0.128 sec. Hamlin won pole for the June 9 Pocono 500 with a lap of 53.054 sec/169.638 mph, then came back in July and bettered that lap with a clocking of 52.995 sec/169.827 mph.

Driving Force: Episode #1 First Impressions

The debut of the NHRA reality series that focuses on John Force and his strained relationship with his wife and three daughters was last night with much fanfare and hype. I had a chance to catch the first episode and there were some good and bad things to take away from it. The best news is that this show will expose a brand new demographic to the sport of drag racing that possibly never even considered going to a drag strip.

Bridgestone Revival Continues In Michelin’s Backyard

Kyle Busch Lasts at Loudon

July 16, 2006

Kyle Busch returned to Victory Lane and moved up to fourth in the Chase for the Cup by winning an overtime decision in the Lenox Industrial Tools 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway. Eleven cautions slowed the race for 49 laps after 21 lead changes saw 11 different drivers leading the race. Dale Earnhardt Jr’s DNF after an engine failure placed him 43rd in the results and dropped him four places in the points, to seventh.
