The NHRA “Western Swing” series (three consecutive events staged in Denver-Seattle-Sonoma) traditionally marks the second half of the drag racing season. The drivers and teams are lined up in Denver, Colorado for the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway.
Qualifying rounds got off to a roaring start considering the thin air up at 5,800 feet of Rocky Mountain high.

Newman First at New Hampshire

Ryan Newman has won pole in 37 of the 171 races in his NASCAR NEXTEL Cup career. In his second pole for the 2006 season, Newman put the No. 12 Penske Racing South Dodge in front of the field for Sunday’s race at a lap time of 29.370 sec/129.683 mph. Last week’s pole winner, Jeff Burton, will flank Newman in his Chevy, with the next four rows all occupied by the bowtie brigade. The second Dodge in the field is Reed Sorenson’s, in ninth, flanked by Kurt Busch and trailed by Kasey Kahne, both in Dodges. The top qualifying Ford belongs to Mark Martin, who qualified 13th, at a lap time of 29.651 sec/128.454 mph.

He is the son of Byron Hines. He is the brother of Matt Hines. At just 23 years of age, Andrew Hines is already his own story. Already the current and defending two-time defending NHRA POWERade Pro Stock Motorcycle champion, he’s searching for his first victory of the season but sits in second place. Hines grew up in Southern California before the team and family moved to Trinidad, Colo. Prior to the opening of the 27th Annual Mopar Mile-High Nationals Hines talks about what he wants most out of the weekend, what the pressure is like being a two-time champion trying to defend his title and why he would have made a great marketing executive had this professional motorcycle career not worked out.
