You knew it was coming. It was just a matter of time. After sitting back and watching the king of all motorsports, NASCAR, take the heat and then receive praise for it’s Nextel Chase for the Championship, the NHRA has announced a similar format to crown its champions. Monikered suspiciously similar to NASCAR’s playoff system, the Countdown to the Championship is the NHRA’s answer to points races that are already decided prior to coming to Pomona, Calif. in November.

CONCORD, N.C. (Aug. 29, 2006) - 2004 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup champion Kurt Busch and veteran Joe Nemechek tested tires for Goodyear Tuesday at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in preparation for the Oct. 14 Bank of America 500 and both believe the tire company has resolved an issue drivers and teams fought during the track’s May events.

The NHRA and Norwalk Raceway Park announced jointly that the race track will be joining the NHRA family of member tracks and will be awarded an NHRA POWERade National event in 2007. Norwalk Raceway Park also announced plans for a $4 million expansion that will bring its facilities up to the standards the NHRA has come to expect from its national event tracks. Sounds like good news all around right? In the zero sum world we live in where there are winners there are also losers as well.

J.R. Todd was eleven years old when he made his debut at NHRA’s most prestigious event, the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals.He remembers pulling his jet black junior dragster into the staging lanes for an O’Reilly Jr. Drag Racing League exhibition run, next to living legend Kenny Bernstein’s 7,000 horsepower rail. Almost 15 years later, Todd’s progress toward his ultimate dream has accelerated faster than the Skull Gear Top Fuel dragster he now uses to race Bernstein’s son Brandon. In his rookie season, Todd has already won two events and is gunning for a spot in the POWERade Series top 10. In this interview Todd discusses his early memories of Indy, his thoughts on possibly being the NHRA Rookie of the Year and what advice he has recieved that has helped him the most.
