Christmas is behind us and the eggnog is getting old in the fridge this time of year. It’s time to start thinking to next year and what New Year’s resolutions we should be making. The gyms will be packed come January 2nd, the elevators will be less crowded because people will resolve to take the stairs and thousands of people will attempt to quick smoking in 2007. Here is my suggested list of New Year’s resolution for the drivers, owners, crew chiefs and anyone else associated with the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.

In just a few days, Tom Hammonds will be moving his Chevy Cobalt NHRA Pro Stock race team into a new raceshop in the Florida panhandle. The 39-year-old Hammonds is ready to face the challenges of once again running his own professional race program, taking delivery of a new Rick Jones-built Chevy Cobalt and hiring Jimmy Oliver to head-up the team’s fledgling engine-building program. A former NBA power forward and two-time all-ACC basketball standout at Georgia Tech, Hammonds announced his retirement from the NBA in Sept. 2001, raced NHRA Pro Stock until he took a sabbatical from the sport in 2003. In this Q & A, Hammonds discusses his decision to return to NHRA Pro STock, reveals how the progress goes on his new race show and reveals the challenges of being so tall and fitting into a race car.

Charlotte, N.C. is the home to the majority of Nascar’s race teams, team owners, drivers and crew chiefs. Indianapolis is rapidly becoming drag racings version of Charlotte. The mass migration by race teams to Indy started a few years ago. It may be time for the NHRA headquarters to consider following suit.

Why should young drivers attend the Future Stars in Racing Academy?
For the same reasons, plus more.
Obviously, the 1961 and 1965 NASCAR champion wanted to improve his skills with the media and the public. It worked too, as he was one of the best-respected and most popular drivers of his era. Jarrett continues to set a standard that future stars aspire to emulate.
