This past weekend in Houston was a time for mourning, reflection and healing in the wake of the tragic death of NHRA Funny Car driver Eric Medlen. As the NHRA family tried to get back to the business of drag racing, (something we all know Eric Medlen would have wanted) there was something missing more than Eric Medlen’s smiling face and jovial demeanor. John Force, Robert Hight and Ashley Force were all not in attendance and those three drivers’ absence could have far reaching effects beyond Medlen’s death.

Between the ill-timed “liquid anti-traction compound falling from the sky” (rainshowers) and sadness over Eric Medlen, it was a rather grubby and depressing weekend until early afternoon Sunday. When the Top Fuel monsters finally fired up and the sun peeked out after the national anthem, all was right with the world. Without any runs since Friday night and a track labeled Big Fat Unknown, the tuners earned their salaries today.
