It’s been three years since the NHRA and the drag racing community lost Darrell Russell to a tragic racing accident in June 2004. Although his time in the NHRA’s professional ranks was short his impact can still be felt today. NHRA.com Senior Editor Rob Geiger was Russell’s closest friend and has recently authored a book, ‘Darrell Russell: Broad Smiles, Quarter-Miles’ that is now available for purchase online. Geiger’s book on Darrell Russell’s life has already received critical acclaim from those in the motorsports media.

How does the old saying go? ‘You can’t tell the players without a scorecard’. The same applies for racing and without the voices from the loud speakers blaring over the roar of nitro engines, we wouldn’t know who was racing. Veteran NHRA Announcer Dave McClelland’s voice is synonymous with drag racing. You would be hard pressed to come across a major moment in the NHRA’s history that McClelland was not on the microphone describing it to the fans. Over a 40+ year career of announcing NHRA drag races he called them all from the legends like Don ‘Big Daddy’ Garlits to Shirley Muldowney to Don ‘the Snake’ Prudhomme to John Force and any other legend of drag racing in between. I was able to catch up with Dave McClelland and found out just what he is up to since leaving the announcing booth.
