The Red Bull Air Race series began their 10-race 2008 tour in Abu Dhabi two weeks ago, and are sending 380 tons of planes and equipment to southern California over the next few days in preparation for the U.S. leg of the season that includes stops in San Diego and Detroit. Paul Bonhomme heads to the States fresh off an opening race win at a race where 2007 Champ, Mike Mangold failed to make the final.

Red Bull Air Race has stepped up their promotional efforts leading up to the U.S. swing in 2008. The series had a huge presence at the Grand Prix of Long Beach, and their booth and video screens in the Grand Prix exposition drew a huge crowd throughout the weekend.
With only two dates in the United States, it isn’t easy to watch the races in person. But considering the spectacular performances these pilots and airplanes put on, this show is not to be missed. The pilots are reported to experience eight or nine G’s in certain maneuvers, which is pretty incredible. And while they are experiencing these incredible G-forces, they are flying with incredible speed and precision. If you’ve been in a light aircraft, and experienced even light aerobatics, you understand just how intense the conditions must be for these pilots.
