ALMS Long Beach pre-race skinny

After a week off, the American Le Mans Series returns to action this weekend in southern California at the Tequila Patron American Le Mans Series at Long Beach where the battle between the LMP2 Porche Spyders and the LMP1 Audi R10 heats up even more in the battle for overall race wins. After the win at the 12 hours of Sebring by Penske Porche, the Audi team responded with an exciting win on the streets of St. Petersburg.
In GT2, the Tafel Racing team is coming away from St. Petersburg with the first win in the ALMS. They are hoping to see one of their Ferrari’s come across the line first, and put together a second win. But Scott Pruett may have something to say about it. The veteran returns to competition this weekend for the Corsa Motorsports team, a team that finished fourth at Long Beach last year.
In GT1, well……you know what’s going to happen. Unless the Corvettes take each other out in turn one, there won’t be much suspense.
But getting back to GT2, there’s a new kid car on the block. Drayson-Barwell received their new Aston Martin Vantage tonight in Los Angeles, and will be busy getting their heir new whip ready to take on the streets of Long Beach and a competitive GT2 field.
Several other teams have also had an extremely busy week. Autocon Motosports, B-K Motorsports, and Penske Motorsports all tested at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah, and have a pretty long tow to make tonight and tomorrow to get to Long Beach in time for Thursday practice.
Did I say, “Thursday”? Yep. The ALMS cars will have two sessions of practice on Thursday this year, which is free to the public. If you are in the Los Angeles area, and want a taste of what these amazing machines, you should stop by and check it out.
And if you are not in the area, you can watch the Tequila Patron American Le Mans Series at Long Beach on ABC. The race will be tape delayed and broadcast on Saturday at 12:30 EDT/9:30 PDT. Check your local listings, especially if you live on the west cost.
